VASCO VIEIRA – Portrait of a visionary architect among the best architects in the world.

by AMILCAR USA

Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright are his inspirations that guided him in the search for a distinctive and innovative architectural identity. Sharp vanishing lines, a photographic cutting of nature with clear lines.

Everything is balance and elegance in his achievements, with a touch of genius that he would call an element of luck, “a little something” that can sometimes make the difference. We are under the spell of this talented and artistic architect.

Vasco Vieira’s portrait for Amilcar Magazine :

VASCO VIEIRA : I was born in 1969 in Johannesburg, South Africa, where I lived until I graduated as an architect from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1994. During my studies, I worked in different studios on weekends and during holidays, which allowed me to gain practical experience from a young age.

By the age of 21, I had already completed projects that I had personally designed and followed. The same year I graduated, I moved to Portugal and, a few months later, I received an invitation to work as an architect in the prestigious resort of Vale do Lobo, in the Algarve. I stayed in this company for 10 years, where I held the positions of chief architect and construction manager.

In 2003, I decided to follow a new path and founded my own studio, initially called Arqui+Lda, which later evolved into Vasco Vieira Arquitectos . The creation of my studio came from the desire to have total creative freedom to explore and develop my own architectural language, without the limitations imposed by working for a large firm. I was inspired by the great masters of 20th century modernism, such as Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright, whose principles guided my search for a distinctive and innovative architectural identity.

We focus mainly on the development of luxury villas, although we also have notable projects in the hotel and resort sector, many of which have a strong ecological component. One of the most emblematic examples is the Areias do Seixo Hotel, one of the first ecological hotels in Portugal, internationally recognized and awarded for its quality and sustainability.

My experience in South Africa, where the connection with the outside world is fundamental, has deeply influenced the way I approach projects. When I arrived in the Algarve, with its exceptional climate, I had the opportunity to perfect this connection between the interior and the exterior, creating subtle and harmonious transitions that are one of the most striking characteristics of our work, distinguishing us from many other Portuguese architects.

Furthermore, each project we develop is unique, designed specifically for the site and the client. This respect for the environment, the views, the climate and the local culture gives each project its authenticity. My greatest satisfaction is to see our clients’ dreams come true when they express their pride in front of the homes we have created together.

Among the projects I am most proud of are the “green” projects, such as the
Areias do Seixo Hotel and the UMAY, already mentioned, but also a
villa in La Moraleja, Madrid, which was designed in total harmony with the natural landscape, preserving the local trees and creating a house that fits perfectly into nature, almost like a “treehouse”.

Being rewarded or recognized is always a source of pride, but my greatest motivation is undoubtedly seeing the satisfaction of our clients. For me, success is not only measured by the awards, but also by the happiness and connection people have with the homes we create for them. I am very happy when we finish a job and the client tells me that their home must be the best project I have ever done – it shows that we really understand our client and that their soul is reflected in the project.

As in any other profession, success in architecture requires hard work, dedication and perseverance. However, as in all careers, there is also an element of luck, that “little something” that can sometimes make the difference.

Personally, I have always considered myself lucky to be able to work in a field that I love, in a country and region that I also love deeply. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of being invited to develop projects in different countries and continents. This experience has been a real school, which has allowed me to discover other cultures, other construction methods and other ways of working.

At Vasco Vieira Arquitectos , our ambition is always to improve the quality of our projects, seeking an increasingly holistic approach. We believe that the integration of interiors and exteriors is fundamental to create a coherent visual language, where interior spaces are a harmonious reflection of the exterior. In this way, we strive to develop uniform and coherent architectural concepts, ensuring that every detail, both inside and out, tells a unique and coherent story.
