CALENDAR PIRELLI 2024 « TIMELESS »

by AMILCAR USA

A PERSONAL TRIP FROM GHANA TO HOLLYWOOD FOR THE PIRELLI 2024 CALENDAR.

The 50th Pirelli Calendar features an eclectic array of stars, chosen for their personal impact and connection to the artist, Prince Gyasi :

“YOU’RE NOT BORN TIMELESS, YOU BECOME IT. MY SUBJECTS ARE LIKE SUPERHEROES”.

Prince Gyasi’s 2024 Pirelli Calendar, presented in London today, is entitled “Timeless” and celebrates people who he believes have marked their time and are destined to inspire future generations. “We are not born ‘timeless’, but become so,” says the Ghanaian artist, explaining that his subjects, photographed in the vivid colors and sharp contrasts that have made him famous, are for him “like superheroes, but at the same time accessible”.

Prince Gyasi is the last of the 39 artists to have created a Pirelli Calendar, and his work constitutes the 50th edition of the Calendar’s 60-year history, from 1964 to 2024, taking into account the years during which it was not published.

The Pirelli Calendar according to Prince Gyasi

When Prince Gyasi was asked to design the 2024 Pirelli Calendar, he began by thinking about who he wanted to feature and what they meant to him, drawing on his own sense of West African community. As one of the youngest artists ever asked to take on the role of Cal, he had to go back to his childhood and think about the people who had inspired him over his 28 years.

It’s a story about what, in the artist’s eyes, makes people “timeless”, and Gyasi believes it’s all about perseverance and integrity. Speaking of model Naomi Campbell, who appears in the Calendar under the title “Time Stopper”, he declares:

“When you look at personalities like Naomi, she’s not from my generation, but she remains an icon in my generation. That’s only possible if you’re committed to your work and your convictions”.

For the Calendar, the Ghanaian artist has transposed these ideas into a manifesto dedicated to “those who want to be timeless”. His aim is to encourage people, especially young people, to learn, create and be inspired in their turn. “I hope to make them realize that they can do anything if they put their minds to it and are consistent enough,” he explains.

The cast

“All the people photographed have recognized their abilities and asserted themselves. They found their power and changed their destiny. This is what it means to be timeless. People who pose challenges, who don’t go along with what society thinks, who aren’t influenced by age, fame or money, and who develop their own talent in an authentic way. They do things that seem extraordinary to many, but which are normal to them, and which can change their destiny. Even without being in the spotlight they can change the game in their field or do something different and, in turn, inspire others.”

The Calendar features His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, King of West Africa’s historic Asante Empire, and his royal delegation, photographed at Manhyia Palace under the title “Royalty”. American actress Angela Bassett represents “Altruist”; author Margot Lee Shetterly and poet Amanda Gorman are “The Imprint”; and contemporary Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo is “The Chosen One”.

Gyasi devoted a month to herself under the title “Details”. The image chosen for the cover – and one of the months – is that of “studious” young Gyasi, portrayed by child model Abul Faid Yussif.

Against a vivid turquoise background, Yussif is photographed playing with miniature versions of some of the objects that appear in the pages of the Calendar: a key held by Bassett; pieces of a clock from Campbell’s set; pink ladders climbed by Gorman; a blue suitcase carried by “the man of honor”, actor, director, DJ and producer Idris Elba.

International celebrity and actress Tiwa Savage is “Resilience”; writer, director and producer Jeymes Samuel is “Visionary”; entrepreneur and former footballer Marcel Desailly is “Focus”; and singer, artist and actress Teyana Taylor is “Future”.

Shooting

Gyasi meticulously plans each shot, composing images that are more painting than photography. He chooses each person carefully, develops the idea for his set design and draws it up, before the renderings are created and the set is built. For the Calendar shoot, the process involved creating everything from a molten clock to a giant red heart.

“I know how I’m going to put the talent in my canvas. Everything is done in advance. You always have to think of a plan B, but I don’t like to do things in the moment, because it can feel a bit messy.”
