Hindman’s inaugural New York sales achieve over $5 million with 40% new buyers

HINDMAN’S INAUGURAL NEW YORK SEASON OF SALES ACHIEVES A COMBINED TOTAL OF $5,333,517 40% NEW BUYERS WITH REGISTERED BIDDERS ACROSS 49 COUNTRIES TWO WORLD AUCTION ARTIST RECORDS.

Hindman’s first ever New York season of auctions achieves a combined total of $5,333,517 across the 295 lots sold. Over 2,000 bidders from 49 countries registered for the four sales and over 40% of buyers were first-time clients to Hindman. There was active participation across all sales channels, and absentee, online, and energetic bidding took place from clients of all ages. Additionally, two world auction records were set for artists LaToya Ruby Frazier (born 1982) and Francis Speight (American, 1896-1989).

TIME & SPACE: WATCHES FROM THE COLLECTION OF GLEN DE VRIES

Total: $3,017,511

Combined total with afternoon session: $3,340,134

October 18, 2023 | New York

  • Lot 27 | F.P. Journe : Platinum ‘Tourbillon Souverain Black Label’. Sold for $415,800.
  • Lot 26 | F.P. Journe : 18k Rose Gold ‘Octa Chronograph’. Sold for $176,400.
  • Lot 39 | Richard Mille : RM-6101 Yohan Blake. Sold for $163,800.

Strong results were achieved for Time & Space: Watches from the Collection of Glen de Vries, which produced a total of $3,017,511 surpassing the low estimate with 95% of 101 lots sold and realizing 106% hammer above low estimate. The top lot of the auction was a rare F.P. Journe, Platinum ‘Tourbillon Souverain Black Label’that realized $415,800 against a low estimate of $250,000. 

Combined with the afternoon various owner sale of Watches, the two auctions, which were held at Hindman’s pop-up space in SoHo, achieved a total of $3,340,134. There was active participation across all sales channels, and absentee, online, and energetic bidding in the room took place from clients of all ages.

FOREVER YOUNG: PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE JOE BAIO COLLECTION

October 19, 2023 | New York.

  • Lot 56 | LaToya Ruby Frazier (born 1982), Momme, 2008. Sold for $50,400. Auction Record for the Artist.
  • Lot 54 | Peter Hujar (1934-1987) Chloe Finch, 1981. Sold for $40,950.
  • Lot 58 | Angela Strassheim (b. 1969) Untitled (Father and Son), 2004. Sold for $15,120.

Forever Young: Photographs from the Joe Baio Collection achieved a total of $384,867. The top lot of the sale was LaToya Ruby Frazier’s Momme, 2008, which sold for $50,400 and achieved a world auction record for the artist.Additionally, Peter Hujar’s Chloe Finch, 1981 sold for more than double its initial estimate, realizing $40,950. Ahead of the auction, Hindman hosted a reception and conversation with collector Joe Baio and photographer Justine Kurland, who had work featured in the auction.

CANVAS & CLAY: THE COLLECTION OF JUDITH AND PHILIP SIEG

  • Lot 68 | Albert York (American, 1928-2009) Landscape with Three Trees and Pond, June 1984. Sold for $176,400
  • Lot 38 | Albert York (American, 1928-2009). Porch Bench with Seated Figure, c. 1967. Sold for $176,400.
  • Lot 2 | Albert York (American, 1928-2009). Three Roses in a Can, 1980. Sold for $163,800.

Canvas & Clay: The Collection of Judith and Philip Sieg, an assemblage of exceptional American fine art and modern pottery,totaled $1,608,516 with 86% sold by lot. The top lots of the sale were Albert York’s Landscape with Three Trees and Pond, June 1984, and Porch Bench with Seated Figure, c. 1967, each of which sold for $176,400. The suite of Albert York paintings, the largest number to ever come to auction, were 100% sold with nearly all achieving above their high estimates. Other notable results include Francis Speight’s White House with Variations, 1930, which sold for $126,000, setting a world auction record for the artist.

Additionally, the selection of Scandinavian studio pottery performed with exceptional results, with strong prices achieved for works by Gertrud Vasegaard.
