Until September 11, 2023, the MILLON Auction House and PÉNÉLOPE BLANCKAERT are presenting an exceptional sale dispersing the personal collection of Brita von Maydell, an iconic fashion journalist who, throughout her career, has forged a unique friendship with Karl Lagerfeld. The meeting between the young journalist, then pregnant, and the couturier then new designer for the Chloé house took place in 1974 near Place Saint-Sulpice. Unable to concentrate because perched on a leather stool dressed in a silk dress, Brita, dying of fear of slipping, is already savoring the elementary particles of a stammering friendship like no other.
Between Karl and the Prussian – “a real one: I click my heels and sleep with a spiked helmet”, confesses Brita with a smile – the beginnings of a singular close relationship take shape which will not dry up until a short time before. the disappearance of the Kaiser, punctuated by travels, lunches in a select committee, political conversations, thoughtful gifts and endless Parisian nights, between splendor and intimacy. “It was not so easy to be German in France at the time. Our meetings were a bit like the German diaspora ! Karl was not nostalgic for Germany, but was attached to it. He had his characteristic accent and a certain typically Germanic way of thinking,” says Brita. She accompanies the couturier during his crazy nights at Le Sept or at the Palace, when still a night owl, he stays seated to better observe and comment on the balladins on the dance floor.
She drinks up gossip before finding him to satiate him with these schoolboy gossip that he savors. It reminds him of his native and cultural Germany, which he seems to get closer to as he grows older, the two compatriots discussing current affairs and politics together, as evidenced by the astonishing drawings on paper representing François Hollande, Eva Joly or even Ségolène Royal, presented for the first time on sale. Singular works testifying to this fledgling friendship like no other, the lots for this sale include a series of sketches, drawings, photographs – including an unpublished self-portrait – objects and limited editions by the hand of the iconic designer who left his mark on the fashion of the turn of the millennium, showing another humorous facet of his artistic genius.
