At a time when many SUVs are competing to be the biggest and flashiest, BMW has chosen a different path: one of maturity. The new X5 doesn’t seek to impress with excess. It wins people over with its balance.

Some cars ride the wave of trends. Others set them. Since 1999, the BMW X5 has belonged to the latter category. As the first premium SUV to so effortlessly combine comfort, sportiness, and prestige, it returns today in its fifth generation—one that doesn’t seek to revolutionize an icon, but to take it to the next level.

The New BMW X5: The Art of Reinventing an Icon For more than a quarter of a century, the BMW X5 has embodied a certain vision of the premium SUV—that of a vehicle capable of combining elegance, dynamism, and versatility without ever compromising on driving pleasure.

With this fifth generation, the Bavarian automaker isn’t trying to overhaul a formula that has more than proven itself. Instead, it prefers to refine it, evolving every detail with remarkable consistency.

At first glance, the new X5 makes a more assertive statement. More sculpted and sleeker, it embraces BMW’s new design language inspired by the Neue Klasse. Its vertical front end, dominated by an Iconic Glow illuminated grille and a brand-new “Double-X” light signature, asserts a strong identity without being over-the-top.

The side lines have a cleaner look, the door handles almost blend into the bodywork, and the proportions remain perfectly balanced. The result is more contemporary, more elegant, and undeniably more prestigious.

Inside, BMW continues this same pursuit of refinement. The cabin now features a more horizontal layout, where every element seems to have been designed to create a sense of spaciousness. The new materials—a blend of slate, glass, and exceptionally refined finishes—create a warm atmosphere that brings the X5 closer to the world of luxury than to that of a simple family SUV.

The sense of spaciousness plays a key role in this move upmarket. Passengers enjoy a generously sized cabin, bathed in light thanks to the standard panoramic roof, while the sport seats, massage functions, ventilation, and numerous customization options transform every trip into a true travel experience.

The already exemplary build quality has reached a new level.

More than just a driver’s seat, the BMW X5 now offers a true rolling lounge where technology and comfort come together with rare elegance.

This evolution continues seamlessly through the new BMW Panoramic iDrive digital interface. A panoramic projection across the entire width of the windshield, a three-dimensional head-up display, a large central screen, and a dedicated passenger display create a particularly immersive digital environment, without ever distracting the driver. The technology takes a back seat to the experience, in keeping with BMW’s philosophy.

Under the hood, the new X5 perfectly exemplifies the German automaker’s technology strategy. For the first time, a single model is available with five different powertrain options: mild-hybrid gasoline, mild-hybrid diesel, plug-in hybrid, all-electric (with the new iX5), and, coming soon, a version powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.

Rarely has a manufacturer offered such a wide variety of options to meet the expectations of all drivers, regardless of their driving habits or their vision for the future of mobility.

More than just an evolution, this fifth generation marks a new chapter in the history of the BMW X5. More mature, more refined, and more technologically advanced than ever, it retains what has defined its identity since 1999 : a rare ability to combine the comfort of a large touring car, the character of a BMW, and the prestige of a model that, over the years, has become one of the undisputed benchmarks in the premium segment. Above all, we appreciate this elegant ability to evolve without compromising its DNA—a quality that has become rare enough to warrant special mention.

The BMW iX5 and BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrids will go on sale in the spring of 2027. These models will be available for order in early October 2026 : https://www.bmwusa.com/
