Hindman will open its New York saleroom this October by offering the exceptional watch collection of Glen de Vries in a single owner auction on October 18. Encompassing 100 watches and 30 watchmakers, the collection of this trailblazing entrepreneur displays de Vries’ passion for science, space, and speed. The sale features timepieces by preeminent manufacturers including F.P. Journe, Richard Mille, A. Lange & Söhne, De Bethune, Patek Philippe, Urwerk, Audemars Piguet, Hublot, Vacheron Constantin, and H. Moser & Cie.

As an American entrepreneur focused on medical sciences and technology, Glen de Vries dedicated his life to providing the public with smarter treatments and creating a healthier world. He was the co-founder and CEO of Medidata Solutions, a software provider that revolutionized clinical trials and medical research. A visionary business leader and passionate scientist, de Vries’s book “The Patient Equation” describes a bold future for medicine, informed by his decades in the field. De Vries was also a long-time supporter and trustee of Carnegie Mellon University, his alma mater.

A man of many diverse talents, de Vries frequently credited his outside interests for his success. He was a true polymath; he was an accomplished ballroom dancer, musician, athlete, Japanophile, and aviator — passions which informed his charitable work, as well as his collecting. De Vries had a lifelong fascination with space travel and, in 2021, was one of four individuals to travel to space aboard the second voyage of Blue Origin NS-18. Describing the impact of his flight in the New York Times, de Vries said, “The passage of time, just like resources on Earth, feels more precious with expanded perspective.”

Excellence in the disciplines of science and technology led de Vries to an interest in timekeeping. Over the course of his adult life, he assembled an enviable collection of watches from the most esteemed manufacturers around the globe, seeking out some of the rarest and most sought-after examples from independent makers and highly sophisticated complications. Encompassing more than 100 watches from 30 watchmakers, the collection of this trailblazing entrepreneur displays de Vries’ passion for science, space, aviation, and speed.

A Rare and Important F.P. Journe, Pla5num ‘Tourbillon Souverain Black Label’ Watch

Headlining the auction is a rare F.P. Journe, Platinum ‘Tourbillon Souverain Black Label’ watch (estimate: $250,000 – $450,000). Produced between 2006 and 2015 and only available to owners of F.P. Journe watches it features a mechanism wholly unique to F.P. Journe revealed through a crystal backing and featuring the distinctive gold dials synonymous with the brand. The exclusivity of the watch paired with elegant, distinctly F.P. Journe style of the piece make this among the rarest timepieces from the coveted Swiss maker.

A Spectacular Richard Mille, RM61-01 Ceramic Yohan Blake’ Watch

Speed has always been a guiding inspiration in watchmaking. It’s no wonder, then that Richard Mille chose to design a watch for Olympic sprinter and second fastest man on earth, Yohan Blake. The RM-6101 Yohan Blake (estimate: $150,000 – $200,000) boasts a highly skeletonized caliber crafted PVD-treated grade 5 titanium and unique asymmetrical case, the RM-6101 is the ultimate in sport watch.

A Rare and CuLng-Edge De Bethune, Ref. DB28XP Titanium Watch

“It is an honor to be launching our inaugural New York sale season with this collection”, comments Gemma Sudlow, Hindman’s Managing Director, New York Region. “The legacy and impact of Mr. de Vries as an innovator in the field of clinical trials cannot be overstated. The opportunity to tell the story of this visionary businessman, philanthropist and thought leader as a collector adds a new dimension to celebrating the life and impact of Mr. de Vries. His passion for horology and art come together in this compelling group of objects.”

“The current global hunger for exceptional timepieces far exceeds the available supply,” stated Reginald Brack, Hindman’s Senior VP, Director, Jewelry & Watches. “We at Hindman are honored to be entrusted with such an important collection, spanning across classic grand complications from the blue-chip makers to avant-garde models from the Independents.”

“This is truly one of the most remarkable collections I have ever had the pleasure of handling,” said Sean Johnson, Hindman’s Senior Specialist of Watches. “Mr. de Vries had a such a deep appreciation for the science of watchmaking, being drawn to some of the most sophisticated complications like tourbillons, perpetual calendars, flyback chronographs, and other groundbreaking mechanical achievements.”

As with any collection, rarity breeds desirability and watches don’t get much rarer than a Datograph Up/Down “Lumen” in 950 Platinum from A. Lange & Söhne (estimate: $120,000 – $180,000). One of just 200, this watch is just as elegant and stunning in complete darkness as it is in full light. The limited edition offered in the auction features a flyback chronograph with a precisely jumping minute counter in platinum.
